Navratri gift budget 15,000 for 8 people

Mother said 8 people. Aunties, two sisters, bhabhi, one neighbour who always brings a box. Budget 15,000. Not 20. Not “see in market”. 15,000. I am the accounts clerk in the house also. I split before Johari Bazaar crowd starts.

I sat on the cot with a paper. 15,000 divided by 8 is 1,875. That number is a lie if two people get silver and six get sweets. Split is not always equal. Split is a plan so I dont come home with 4 gifts and empty wallet and GST still due next week.

How I split 15,000 without fighting at home

I made three buckets. Close family bigger share. Neighbour smaller. Kids of cousins a box of dry fruit, not a sari.

Close family 3 people. I put 2,400 each. That is 7,200.

Next 3 people. 1,600 each. 4,800.

Last 2 people. 1,000 each. 2,000.

Total 14,000. I kept 1,000 for auto, packing, one extra box if someone lands from village. Last year someone landed. I had 200 left. This year I keep 1,000.

People want equal because equal sounds fair. Equal is not fair when one is mother in law of your sister and one is a child. I dont debate this on WhatsApp. I write names. I show mother. She changes two names. Fine.

I dont start shopping without the list. Market will sell me a fifth thing. List is a wall.

If gold talk starts, 15,000 is not 10 gram. 10 gram is another planet this year. I send them to Gold 10 gram, what is it worth at todays rate I type. Then they stop asking me for gold coin for all 8. We do coins only if budget grows. It did not grow.

Deadline money sitting under the same 15,000

This is the part family hates. I still say it.

Same week as Navratri shopping, GSTR-1 last date can sit. I almost treated a festival week like a holiday from GST. Portal does not. Read GSTR-1 last date this month, what if I miss it. Late fee can eat one gift. Ugly thought. True thought.

School holiday week plus GST week is a bad mix. Kids home. Market trip. Return pending. I file before picnic. School holiday week and GST due same week, plan.

If I spend full 15,000 on Monday and cash ledger is empty on Thursday, 3B gets stuck. Challan first. Cash ledger empty, challan first or return first. I keep GST cash in a different envelope. Festival envelope is festival. Tax envelope is tax. Mixing is how shops get late fee showing 5,000.

What I actually bought last year and what I will not repeat

Last year I bought one fancy box for everyone from a mall. Looked same. Two aunties compared. Then they felt the cheaper one was insult. Never again same box for all if prices differ. Either all same price or clearly different relation.

I bought sweets on day 8. Line was long. Sweets were dry. This year I buy on day 3 for people I will meet later, and day 8 only for same day visits.

I paid UPI at a stall. Network died. Stall said cash. I had 200. Gift budget must include cash float. 500 at least in pocket. Jaipur old city still likes cash at some counters.

I took a shop discount that was 25 percent but GST already in bill confused me. Split of 18 percent is a counter skill. GST 18 percent already in the bill, how to split. For gifts I still ask for bill if amount is not tiny. Shop needs bill. House needs bill if we ever argue with a card statement.

I will not buy gold plated things that look gold in night light. Morning they look sad. If we cannot do real gold, we do silver small or we do clothes. Fake gold is a fight waiting.

I will not shop after 9 pm on a working day before GSTR-1. I filed late once because Bapu Bazaar ate my evening. Portal hang at night. Screenshot not enough. I wrote that later.

Phone voice when relatives say spend more

I say budget is 15,000 this year. Bonus not yet. Rent went up. I dont give a speech.

If they say neighbour spent 50,000, I say neighbour has a different shop. I am clerk.

If they say put on card, I say card is still money. EMI on gifts is a foolish circle.

If they say take from GST cash, I say no. That cash is not ours till return is filed and tax is paid. I have seen a shop use GST cash for Diwali lights. Then challan bounce style panic. Dont.

I offer to split again. Put more on mother. Less on neighbour. Neighbour still gets something. Something is not nothing. Nothing is the insult.

List I keep in the diary the night before market

Eight names. Amount next to each. Tick box.

What to buy in words. Saree or box or silver pair. Not “something nice”. Something nice is how 15,000 becomes 22,000.

Shop names. One for clothes. One for sweets. One for silver if any.

Bills in one envelope. If shop is mine, sale bills of the day still go in GST file, not in gift envelope.

Phone charged. UPI two apps. Cash 1,000 of the reserve.

If 15,000 is not enough after mother adds two more names, I dont hide it. I say then we cut per head or we cut two names. We dont pretend.
