Company wants notice period 60 days, last day when

Matching tool: Notice period days

HR on the phone said sixty days. I was standing near the water cooler in our Jaipur office, accounts files still open. I thought last day is next Monday plus two months. That is how my brain works when I am tired. It is not how calendar works.

I sat down. Opened diary. Counted from today. Not from next Monday. Not from first of next month. Today.

If you want the last working day without arguing with fingers, open Notice period days on PayByDate. Type start date. Type 60. Read the date it throws. Then still read your offer letter. This is an estimate. Confirm on the official portal. Company portal. HR mail. Whatever your firm uses as law.

How I counted it wrong the first time

I got a better offer from a firm near C-Scheme. Old company said notice is 60 days. I heard 60 and I saw October on the wall calendar. I skipped the remaining days of this month in my head. I jumped to 1st of next month like a lazy clerk.

That mistake costs joining date. New HR asked last working day. I said a date. Old HR said a different date. I looked stupid on both sides.

Sixty calendar days is not two months. February is short. July is long. If notice starts 8 September, last day is not 8 November by magic. You add 60 days. Sundays sit inside. Gazetted holidays sit inside unless letter says working days.

My letter said calendar days. I still counted working days for one afternoon. Then I read the PDF again on phone. Calendar days. I felt like a fool.

Some letters say 60 working days. That is a different animal. Shop closed Sunday, then 60 working days stretches longer. I dont mix the two on one sticky note.

I wrote both dates in diary. One if calendar. One if working. I circled the one in the letter.

Relieving letter date and last salary date can also fight. I saw that in 2025. Last day was a Saturday. Accounts said salary cycle closes Friday. I asked in writing. Got a one line mail. Keep that mail.

What last day actually means for salary and PF

Last day is not only goodbye cake. Last day decides which month salary you get. It decides if EPF still runs for that month. It decides professional tax on the thin slip.

If last day is 3rd of a month, some payrolls still pay full month. Some cut days. I dont guess. I ask payroll uncle. In our office he sits near the printer that jams.

EPF for last month salary has its own window. I keep that story here: EPF payment date for last month salary. If you leave mid month, dont assume PF skip is automatic. Company may still deposit for days you worked.

ESI and EPF can sit in same week even in your last month. I wrote that mess here: ESI and EPF same week, which date first. Last month you still care because short payment later becomes a notice you dont want after joining new place.

Professional tax in Rajasthan is small but it shows on take-home. September slip already looks thin. Read Professional tax and take-home in September if your notice covers that month. You will see why last day in September vs October changes the envelope.

Form 16 later will show part year. New company will ask for previous employer details. I keep last payslip, Form 16 if they give, and relieving. If HR is late on Form 16, salary slips still help a rough tax. That story sits here: Form 16 not given, can I still estimate tax.

I also check if festival bonus is due in October while I am serving notice. Some firms cut bonus if you are leaving. Some still pay. I dont shout in corridor. I read policy PDF. Bonus tax estimate is a separate headache: Festival bonus in October, tax estimate.

Buyout, leave balance, and the date that moves

People ask can I buy out 60 days. Some companies allow. Some dont. Amount is often gross per day times leftover days. That money looks big. Then TDS sits on it if it is treated as salary. I run a rough cut on Salary to monthly tax. Number is not a CA certificate.

Leave balance can reduce notice. Encashment can sit in full and final. Full and final in Jaipur firms can take 30 to 45 days after last day. I have seen 60. I dont plan rent on that cheque.

If you take leave during notice, last day may still stay same, or HR may extend. My friend in Vaishali Nagar took 8 days sick. HR extended last day by 8. His new joining got delayed. He had to beg new HR.

Garden leave is rare in our size of office. If it happens, you stay home but last day is still a date on paper. Dont post new company photo on Instagram before that date if old HR is strict. I have seen mails about that. Silly but real.

Resignation date vs notice start date. Some HR start notice next working day. Some start same day if you mail before 11. I send mail before lunch. I keep sent folder screenshot. Not because I am dramatic. Because later they say they never got it.

I count last day on the tool, then I write it in the resignation mail. “Last working day as per 60 calendar days from today is this date.” If they disagree, they reply. Silence later is worse.

Phone voice I use with HR so the date is clear

I dont write long English. I write three lines.

Today date. Notice 60 calendar days as per letter clause. Proposed last working day.

I attach the clause screenshot. I ask them to confirm in reply. If they say 60 working days, I recalculate. I open Notice period days again. I change the mode in my head. Tool is a helper. Letter wins.

If last day falls on Sunday, I ask is Saturday last working day. Some offices work Saturday first and third. Our accounts team used to. Then they stopped. I confirm which Saturday is live that month.

Diwali week notice is a special pain. Office half shut. HR on leave. Last day in that week and nobody is there to sign relieving. I try not to land last day in that week. If I must, I start paperwork ten days early.

Same for GST week if you are the accounts clerk who also files. GSTR-1 around 11th. 3B around 20th. If your last day is 12 September, dont leave the GSTIN password only in your head. Hand over. Write on paper. Next person will call you from the counter anyway.

I once served notice through September. Advance tax 15 Sep still sat on my freelance side work. Salary job ending does not pause that. I keep that on a different article list. For salary only people, still check: Salary only, do I still pay advance tax.

Mistakes I still see on the shop WhatsApp groups

Counting 60 from next Monday because “week should be full”. No.

Treating two months as 60 days. August plus September is 61. I know. I counted.

Forgetting the start day itself. Some count remaining days after today. Letter may include today. I read clause. If silent, I ask.

Using a US website that skips Indian holidays. Our gazetted list is not their list. Jaipur local holiday is not Delhi holiday.

Believing a colleague who left last year under old policy. Policy PDF on intranet is newer. I download it the day I resign.

Not keeping the resignation PDF. Phone mail app hides it. I forward to personal mail the same day. Company laptop will lock on last day. Then you have nothing.

Arguing last day on phone only. Phone has no date stamp you can show new HR. Mail has.

What I keep in a plastic file before last day

Resignation mail. HR confirmation of last day. Offer of new company with joining date one or two days after last day, not overlapping if old company is strict.

Last three payslips. PF UAN. ESI number if any. Form 16 if ready. Tax computation if payroll gave.

ID card. Sim of office if they gave. Laptop checklist. I dont want a 2,000 recovery for a mouse I already returned.

Full and final estimate. Leave days. Notice recovery if any. I write numbers by hand. Then I wait for actual sheet. They differ. They always differ a bit.

If new joining is far, I keep one week buffer. Sixty days plus buffer. I lost a joining once because relieving was late by two days and new HR was rude. Buffer is cheaper than ego.

If you only want the date math, use the tool. If the letter is messy, still use the tool as a second clock. Then mail HR. Dont fight the calendar in your head at 11 night after overtime.

I am not your HR. PayByDate is a helper. Official company letter wins. If they move last day by one day on a Friday evening mail, that mail is the law for you, not my diary.

Count from today. Write the date. Sleep.

This is an estimate. Confirm on the official portal.
