First time advance tax, which box to fill first

Matching tool: Advance tax calculator

First challan I opened like a railway form. Too many boxes. Cousin sent a WhatsApp with a code. I almost typed that code. His code was for a different tax.

I fill tax amount first now. After I know the rupee. Codes after. Assessment year after. I dont start from a forward.

If you dont even know the rupee, open Advance tax calculator on PayByDate. Type year income guess. See the cut for this instalment. This is an estimate. Confirm on the official portal.

What I decide before I touch a box

Who is paying. Me as person. Not the shop GSTIN. Advance tax for income tax is PAN world. GST challan is GSTIN world. I have seen a man try to pay advance tax inside gst.gov.in. Different building.

Which instalment. 15 June 15 percent. 15 September 45 percent. 15 December 75. 15 March 100. Typical pattern. I read Advance tax 15 September when the 45 cut is near.

How much already paid. June challan in a file. TDS already cut. I reduce TDS. I dont pay twice: TDS deducted, do I reduce it from advance tax. If I paid some: I paid some advance tax already.

Salary only maybe I dont need this challan: Salary only, do I still pay advance tax.

If I missed last September, interest is a later ITR line: Second instalment missed last year. Shortfall guess: Advance tax shortfall.

I write the rupee on paper. Then I open e-pay tax on the official site.

Which box I fill first on the screen I actually see

Screens change. I still use the same order.

PAN. I check twice. One wrong letter and money goes to a ghost.

Assessment year. People mix year and financial year. I look at the help text on the live page. I dont memorise a 2024 screenshot.

Type of payment. Advance tax is the word I want. Not self assessment if this is a instalment before year end. Not regular assessment. WhatsApp mixes these.

Major head minor head. This is where forwards kill you. I pick what the official list shows for advance tax. I dont copy cousin’s 14 digit poetry.

Then amount. The rupee from my paper.

Then bank. Then pay.

I save challan PDF same day. I write CIN in shop diary.

If I am a freelancer near 9 lakh, same boxes, bigger rupee: Advance tax for freelancer 9 lakh. If June was blank: Missed June instalment, what happens in September.

Mistakes I made and I still see

Filling a random code first because the box was red. Amount was empty. I paid 1 rupee like a test. Then I paid again. Two challans. Cleanup later.

Selecting self assessment in June. Then ITR utility looks confused. I keep advance tax as advance tax till year ends. After 31 March the mood changes. I read the live label.

Paying from shop current account and forgetting to tell CA. Money is still yours. Paper trail should match PAN.

Using GST challan heads. CGST is not income tax.

Trusting a calculator and not confirming AY. Tool is direction. Portal is the box. This is an estimate. Confirm on the official portal.

ITR late fee is a different worry after 31 July type due. Dont mix that fee into this challan: ITR late fee estimator.

Notice after a wrong head, first check the PDF: Notice after filing.

What I keep next to the phone for a first challan

PAN card photo. Bank with limit enough. Paper rupee. Last TDS if any.

Quiet ten minutes. Not 11 night after a wedding.

I tell first timers. Amount first in your head. Correct payment type on screen. Then bank. Then PDF.

How I get the rupee before any box goes red

I guess year income. Shop profit plus any freelance plus interest I already saw. I run Advance tax calculator. I see tax for the year. I see what this instalment wants.

I subtract TDS I believe. I subtract June if June exists. What is left is the box amount. Paper first.

If the leftover is tiny, I still check the 10,000 type talk people do. Some years small leftover means no advance. I dont swear the live line on a blog. I look at the year rule. Salary only story sits here: Salary only, do I still pay advance tax.

If leftover is fat, I dont wait for December to be a hero. September 45 percent is the cut that bites: Advance tax 15 September.

If I already missed a cut, I still pay now. Interest later is cheaper if the hole is smaller: Second instalment missed last year. I use Advance tax shortfall as a shape. This is an estimate. Confirm on the official portal.

A first challan I almost sent to the wrong year

I picked AY the way I pick a bus. First one in the list. It was last year. Amount was this year September money. Bank went through. Then CA asked why a challan sits in a closed year.

We had to talk to the correction path. Days. Mood. I now read AY like I read a train number. Slow.

That is why I dont fill codes first. Codes feel smart. Year and payment type are the real steering. Amount is the petrol. Bank is the last click.

GST 3B challan the same week can confuse a first timer. Different portal. Different GSTIN. I keep two envelopes. Yellow for GST. White for income tax. Childish. It works.

If official tax and my tool differ after I file ITR, that is a later hunt: Why official tax and this calculator differ. First challan night I only want a clean advance tax payment.

I also write the instalment name on the paper. June. September. December. March. So I dont pay March money in a September box in my head. The screen may not say the month in fat letters. My paper does.

If I paid some already and I am making a second challan, I still start from the leftover rupee, not from a new full 45 percent: I paid some advance tax already.

If a notice comes later about a wrong head, I dont open PDF on shop wifi in a rush. First check list: Notice after filing, first thing to check.

I am not the department. PayByDate is a helper. Official e-pay tax page wins. If they rename a box on a Friday, I read the new box.

Know the rupee. Pick advance tax. Pay. Then tea.

This is an estimate. Confirm on the official portal.
