Advance Tax
Missed June instalment, what happens in September
2023-11-27 · updated 2026-08-22
Matching tool: Advance tax shortfall
June went blank. September does not forget that 15 percent. I skipped 15 June because the shop needed stock. I told myself I will do a double in September. Double is not the right picture. September wants 45 percent of the year tax leftover. That 45 already includes the 15 you missed. So you catch up. You dont pay June again as a separate god.
Tea was hot that June morning. I still went to the wholesaler. Challan stayed empty. In September the notebook was ruder.
If you want already paid versus what is usually due by this instalment, open Advance tax shortfall on PayByDate. Paid is zero. Due by September is the 45 percent typical cut. Gap is ugly but clear. Then the official portal.

What “missed June” actually means
Typical pattern. By 15 June you should have paid 15 percent of estimated tax for the year after TDS. I paid 0. So I am short 15 percent from that date onward in the interest story people tell.
By 15 September I should have 45 percent paid. I still have 0. So I am short 45 percent if I pay nothing now. Paying only the missed 15 in September is not enough. Paying 15 plus 45 as 60 is too much. Paying 45 now is the catch-up of the typical line.
I write it on paper every time because my brain wants 15+45=60.
Year leftover tax guess 1,00,000. June should have been 15,000. I paid 0. September need 45,000 on the books. I pay 45,000 in September. I do not pay 60,000. I also do not pay only 15,000 and wait for December.
If cash is tight I still try to hit near 45. Interest on the June shortfall may already have started in that 234C mood. Paying September well does not rewind June like a cassette. It stops the September shortfall from being huge.
Last year I missed June and also underpaid September. ITR time showed interest. Second instalment missed last year, interest. That article is the hangover. This one is the September morning.
Why June gets skipped in a shop
Stock. Wedding. GST 3B. EPF. Rain in the godown. All real. Income tax 15 June sits in a quieter corner of the calendar. GST shouts every month. Advance tax shouts four times. I hear GST more.
Tonk Road June is also slow sale sometimes. Paying 15 percent of a year guess when the drawer is thin feels stupid. Then Diwali quarter prints money and September-December become the real tax months. Still the law clock, typical pattern, started in June.
Some people should skip June because leftover tax is below the small threshold talk. Salary only. Salary only, do I still pay advance tax. If that is you, missed June is not a sin. If you are a shop with profit, missed June is a shortfall.
Freelancer who had no invoice till August, June estimate was honestly small. Then September invoices exploded. That is not really “missed”, that is estimate moved. Still pay 45 of the new guess. Advance tax for freelancer 9 lakh.
First time June, boxes scared me. I delayed. First time advance tax, which box to fill first. Fear of wrong box is how June goes blank. Fill tax amount. Dont wait for a YouTube uncle.
September action list I follow now
Redo year tax guess. Fresh. Not the April number.
Reduce TDS. TDS deducted, do I reduce it from advance tax. TDS quick estimate if a new client cut 10 percent.
See 45 percent of leftover. That is the September target because June is zero.
Open Advance tax shortfall. Paid 0. Instalment September. Gap = target.
Open Advance tax calculator to see all four slices on the new guess. December and March still exist. Dont empty the drawer so much that stock dies.
Pay on 13th or 14th if I can. 15th portal is a mela.
Keep CIN in the file that was empty in June. File is not empty now.
Read the 45 percent piece if the percent still feels like a riddle. Advance tax 15 September, how much is the 45 percent cut.
If you paid a little in July as guilt, that counts in already paid. Then gap is smaller. I paid some advance tax already, how much more now.
Interest talk without priest language
I am not going to print a formula like a circular. I say this. Shortfall from a due instalment can attract extra interest. June shortfall had more months to sit. September shortfall sits fewer months before next dates. Missing both is louder.
Paying in September does not erase June interest like it never happened. It can limit the damage. Exact rupee is ITR time and the portal. My tool is a gap helper, not an interest gazette.
If you want a late ITR fee later, that is another clock. ITR filed late, late fee on 7 lakh income. Dont mix.
If official tax and a calculator differ by 2,000, both can be honest. Why official tax and this calculator differ by 2,000.

Mistakes after a blank June
Paying 15 percent in September and ticking a mental box “June done”. September box is still hungry.
Paying 60 percent because a cousin added 15 and 45.
Ignoring it because “I will pay 100 percent in March”. March 100 is the last typical cut. The earlier cuts still had their own interest story. March dump is a known style. I still dont recommend it as a plan. Cash in March is also GST and Holi and random.
Using GST late fee estimator for this. Wrong tool. GST late fee estimator is for GSTR. Cute but useless here.
Writing June instalment on the GST calendar sticker and then thinking 20th. 15 June is income tax. 20th is 3B. I mixed dates in 2022. Paid nothing on 15. Filed 3B on 20. Felt productive. Was not.
WhatsApp “June waived this year”. I dont trust it.
What I keep so June does not go blank next year
A reminder in the shop diary in May. Not on 14 June night.
A rough year tax after first two months of sale. Even a bad guess is a seed.
If leftover looks under the small threshold, I write “maybe skip” and I still check in September.
Cash side, I treat June 15 percent like a small supplier bill. Pay it like stock.
EPF and GST still happen. I pick a morning with less counter crowd. Working days tool if I travel. Working days calculator.
School holiday is June sometimes. Picnic is not a tax leave. Same sermon as School holiday week and GST due same week, plan.
After I paid the 45 in September
I did not feel holy. I felt late. June hole is still a hole in the interest tale. But the September line is met on paper.
I wrote in the diary. Next June, challan first, wholesaler second. Stock can wait one morning. Tax clock does not.
I am not the Income Tax Department. PayByDate is a helper. Dates are typical pattern, not law. If 15 June or 15 September move, official portal wins, not my tea-stained notebook.
June went blank. September does not forget. Pay the 45 cut of the leftover, not a random double. Then open the shutter on Tonk Road.
