ITR Late Fee
Why official tax and this calculator differ by 2,000

Matching tool: Old vs new regime estimate
My tool said one number. Portal said 2,000 more. I sat with tea and felt cheated. Then I looked at AIS. Then I looked at rebate. Then I looked at a standard deduction I forgot to type.
Both can be honest.
PayByDate calculators are pocket maths. Official utility has your full form, your TDS, your schedule, your rounding. I use the tool to choose a direction. I use portal to pay.
If you want the regime direction first, open Old vs new regime estimate. Type what you actually have, not a round lakh. Read both sides. This is an estimate. Confirm on the official portal.
Why 2,000 is a common gap I see
Forgot standard deduction on salary. Tool asked. I typed gross like net. 50,000 type deduction talk moves tax more than 2,000 some years. Some years less.
Forgot rebate. Portal applies if you fit. Tool may need you to pick the right band.
Forgot professional tax. Small. Still a gap.
Forgot interest from AIS. Tool had salary only. Portal had AIS import. Extra interest I check here: AIS shows extra interest.
Forgot LTCG. Tool was salary compare. AIS had a fund sale. See LTCG line in AIS.
Typed monthly salary as yearly. I have done this on a loud counter. 32,000 into the yearly box. Tool looks kind. Portal looks like a thief. Thief is me.
Old vs new switch. I compared old on tool and filed new on portal. Or reverse. 2,000 is a polite gap. Sometimes it is 12,000.
Form 16 not in hand so I guessed HRA. Guess is a gap. See Form 16 not given.
Education cess rounding. I dont fight 80 rupees. I fight 2,000.
How I hunt the gap on a paper
I write tool number. I write portal number. I write difference.
I tick salary. Bonus. Interest. Rent. Gain. Deduction I claimed.
I open Form 16 if I have it. I open AIS. I open last year ITR if the same FD sits there.
If I crossed exemption and thought tax is nil, rebate and filing are different talks: Taxable income more than basic exemption.
If ITR is late, late fee is extra on top of tax. People add fee into “tax difference” and shout at the calculator. Fee is another tool: ITR late fee estimator. Seven lakh band story: ITR filed late, late fee on 7 lakh.
If I already filed and then portal looks different, I may be in revise land: Belated return vs revised return.
E-verify pending means portal tax you saw may not even be a finished return: E-verify pending.
I dont change the tool to match portal by lying in the boxes. I change my paper to match life. Then I type again.
What I tell shop owners when they forward a screenshot
Screenshot of a YouTube tax and screenshot of my tool and screenshot of portal. Three numbers. Four opinions in a family group.
I say pick one official. incometax.gov.in. The others are flashlights.
Festival bonus they forgot in the tool: Festival bonus in October.
TDS they want to reduce from advance: TDS deducted, do I reduce it from advance tax. Advance and ITR tax are cousins. Not twins.
Salary only advance question: Salary only, do I still pay advance tax.
I also say. A 2,000 gap is not always a bug. It is often a missing line. If after all lines it still gaps, I pay portal. I dont pay a blog.
Notice after filing, I dont open in a rush: Notice after filing, first thing to check.
What I keep so the gap stays small next year
I type yearly numbers. I type all income pockets I know. I pick one regime and stick for the compare.
I run the tool in August and again in June of next year before I file. Life moves.
I keep the sentence under every PayByDate number. This is an estimate. Confirm on the official portal.
A shop story where the 2,000 was a bonus I forgot
Sales boy in Jagatpura used my old vs new tool in May. Number looked friendly. In June HR put a festival type bonus on the April slip he had ignored. Portal imported AIS. Extra income. Extra tax. About 2,200.
He said your calculator is wrong. I said your May paper is incomplete. We typed bonus. Tool moved. Portal still won by a little because of rounding and a small interest line.
That is the mood I want people to keep. Tool is a torch. Portal is the road.
ITR-1 reason question he also panicked about because he filed a bit late. Reason is a label. Not a discount. See ITR-1 reason question.
If he had sold a fund the same year, the gap would have been bigger. I send that check first now: LTCG line in AIS.
What I refuse to do when numbers fight
I refuse to edit the official form to match a blog number. That is backwards.
I refuse to ignore 2,000 because “it is small”. Small is still money. Find it.
I refuse to add GST late fee or EPF into income tax gap. Different buildings. Different diaries.
I refuse a YouTube slab from 2021. Year matters.
I refuse to file at 11 night just to end the argument. Wrong click stays.
I also refuse to tell anyone PayByDate is official. It is not. I repeat the line. This is an estimate. Confirm on the official portal.
If after a clean paper the portal is still higher, I pay portal. I sleep. If a notice comes, I read it slow: Notice after filing, first thing to check.
Crossing exemption people use the tool as a yes-no. Tool can say nil tax after rebate and portal can still want a return. Filing is not the same as paying fat tax: Taxable income more than basic exemption.
I am not CBDT. PayByDate is a helper. Official computation wins. If they change a rebate in a night notification, portal will know first.
I keep one more habit. I type the same numbers into the tool that I type into the form. If I hide a FD from the tool, the tool will look kind. Kind is a lie.
If ITR-1 reason dropdown also sits on the same evening, I pick the option that matches paper, not the option that sounds polite: ITR-1 reason question. Gap hunt and reason hunt are two jobs. I dont mix them in one angry tap.
Find the missing line. Then file the official number. Then drink tea without fighting a 2,000 ghost.
This is an estimate. Confirm on the official portal.
