ITR filed late, late fee on 7 lakh income

Matching tool: ITR late fee estimator

I filed late last year. Income around seven lakh. Shop profit, one FD, small savings interest. I thought late fee is same for everyone. It is not.

My cousin in Malviya Nagar has four lakh salary. He paid one thousand and slept. I sat with tea near Johari Bazaar and the number on my slip was bigger. Portal does not care that my shop was busy in July.

Typical due date for a simple ITR, no audit, sits around 31 July. Official date can move. I dont treat a WhatsApp forward as law. I open incometax.gov.in and look.

If you only want a rupee guess before you call the CA, open ITR late fee estimator on PayByDate. Type days after deadline. Type income band. Read the number as a guess. This is an estimate. Confirm on the official portal.

What late fee means on seven lakh

People mix three pains. Late fee. Interest. And the tax you still owe.

Late fee is the flat slap for filing after due date. On income above five lakh, the typical talk is five thousand. Under five lakh, people talk one thousand. Seven lakh sits above that line. So I do not copy my cousin’s challan.

I am not quoting a gazette on this page. Pattern can change. I put my days and my band in the tool and I still open the portal before I transfer money.

Interest is a different animal. If tax was unpaid after 31 March of that year, interest can run even if you file on time. If you file late and tax is still unpaid, interest keeps walking. Late fee can look small next to that.

I had tax left of about eighteen thousand. I paid it in August with the return. Interest showed. Late fee showed. Two lines. I wrote both in the shop diary.

A man from Bani Park called me in August 2025. He said seven lakh income, filed 20 August, asked if fee is five hundred a day like GST. I said no. ITR late fee is not that daily GST dance. Different law. Different screen.

GST late I wrote in another place. If your 3B is also late, that is a different calculator. See GSTR-3B late by 8 days. Dont add those rupees into ITR fee.

How I counted my seven lakh

I did not take “seven lakh” from air. I sat with three papers.

Shop P and L from the accountant. Rough. He is in C-Scheme and he is slow in July.

Form 26AS and AIS from the portal. FD interest was there. One savings account I forgot.

A small rent I got from a room behind the shop. That one I almost skipped. AIS had a line. I did not.

Total came near 7,10,000. I rounded in my head to seven lakh when I talked to people. Portal wants the real number.

If taxable income is only a little above basic exemption, filing still matters. I wrote that worry here: Taxable income more than basic exemption, now what. Seven lakh is not that edge case. Seven lakh is a full return.

Old vs new regime changed my tax by a few thousand. I ran a rough check on Old vs new regime estimate. Tool and portal can differ. I have a page for that also: Why official tax and this calculator differ by 2,000.

I picked the regime on the return. I did not pick it on a napkin and then forget.

The July I missed

July in Jaipur is not a holiday. Shop was open. Two staff on leave. GST week also sat there. GSTR-1 around 11th. I chased invoices. ITR file I pushed to “after 20th”.

After 20th I told myself after 31st is only two days, fee will be small. Fee is not per day like I hoped. It is a slab people talk about. Miss the due date, the late fee door opens.

I filed on 12 August. E-verify I did same night. That part people skip. Upload is not the end. I wrote the e-verify story separately: E-verify pending, is my ITR even filed.

If I had waited till December, people say the late fee talk stays in that same band for many cases, but interest grows. I dont wait to test that. I file when papers are ready.

Belated return is the name when you file after due date. Revised is when you already filed and then fix. I mixed those words on the phone. Then I wrote Belated return vs revised return so I stop mixing them.

What I keep in the diary now

Due date sticker. Not “July end”, the actual day when the portal shows it.

Income slip. Shop, interest, any other. Seven lakh is easy to say. Easy to miss one FD.

Challan if tax is payable. I dont file and then hunt money next week.

Password. Aadhaar on the phone. Bank for refund.

If CA is busy, I still collect papers. CA in September is a queue. Advance tax 15 September sits on same calendar. I almost paid late fee and then forgot the 45 percent cut. Different tax. See Advance tax 15 September.

Mistakes I still hear on the phone

“Income is seven lakh so I will not file, tax is small.” Filing and tax are not the same sentence. Late fee can still come if you file late. Notice can still come if you dont file.

“I paid tax in March so late fee is zero.” Tax paid is good. Return still has a due date.

“I filed ITR-1 from a cyber cafe and they said fee is included.” Ask for the computation. Ask for acknowledgement. I take a print.

“My friend with 4.8 lakh paid 1,000 so I also pay 1,000.” Band changed. Seven lakh is not 4.8.

“I will revise later so late is fine.” Revise is for a filed return. If nothing is filed, you are not revising. You are late.

Copying last year JSON or last year Excel and changing one cell. I did a version of that. Interest line was old. AIS did not match.

Interest I did not expect

Late fee I had heard. Interest I treated as a CA problem.

When tax is unpaid, interest under the usual sections can show. People say 1 percent a month in talk. I dont lock that on a blog as law. I look at the computation the portal makes.

If you already paid some tax as TDS, that reduces the tax left. It does not delete late fee by itself. TDS story for advance tax is here: TDS deducted, do I reduce it from advance tax. Same idea. Credit is credit. Deadline is deadline.

I put a simple extra interest in Belated return cost when I want fee plus a number I type. Still a guess.

Refund cases are different mood. If you are due a refund and you file late, late fee can still sit there and eat the refund. I saw that on a neighbour’s slip. He thought refund means no fee. Portal subtracted.

What I do the week before I file late

I dont file at 11 night on shop wifi if I can avoid it. Portal hang happens. ITR is not GST last date crowd exactly, but August still has traffic.

I download AIS again. Not the March one. Fresh.

I check if any notice already came. Filing late after a notice is a different heat. First check story is here: Notice after filing, first thing to check.

I keep Form 16 if salary is there. Shop owners like me may not have Form 16. Then 26AS and books. If HR is late on Form 16, that is another page: Form 16 not given, can I still estimate tax.

I write the reason I am late in one line. Not for poetry. For myself. Shop busy is not a portal field. It is so I dont lie to the CA.

Dates I watch in this season

September 2026 search is live dates. ITR belated window is still on many minds after July. Advance tax 15 Sep. GSTR-1 around 11. GSTR-3B around 20. EPF around 15.

I dont mix ITR late fee into GST late fee. Two portals. Two diaries.

If income is seven lakh and you are reading this in August or September, file. Then e-verify. Then keep the acknowledgement in the steel almirah, not only on the phone.

Use ITR late fee estimator for a band guess. Use the official portal for the real challan.

I am not CBDT. PayByDate is a helper. Official incometax.gov.in wins. If they move the July date on a Friday night, I will still tell you to look at the portal, not at my calendar sticker.

File. Pay the fee if it is there. Sleep. Then check e-verify status in the morning.

This is an estimate. Confirm on the official portal.
