Taxable income more than basic exemption, now what

Matching tool: Old vs new regime estimate

I got a call from a sales boy in Jagatpura last August. Take home looks 28,000 some months. He said I am small. Why ITR. I opened his slips on WhatsApp. Taxable was over the basic exemption line once I added bonus and a small FD interest.

Hand money and taxable money are not same photo.

Basic exemption is the line below which many people pay no income tax in the usual talk. Cross it and filing is not a hobby. Portal will still ask you later if AIS has salary and you stay quiet.

I dont treat a blog as law. Slabs move. New regime and old regime have different stories some years. I run a rough compare first. Open Old vs new regime estimate on PayByDate. Type income. See both sides. This is an estimate. Confirm on the official portal.

What “more than basic exemption” means in shop talk

Shop talk is simple. If after the allowed deductions the number still sits above the exemption, you are in filing land. People hear 2.5 lakh or 3 lakh or 7 lakh rebate talk and mix all three.

I keep three cups on the table.

Cup one is exemption. Below this, tax is usually nil in that regime.

Cup two is rebate talk. Some years tax becomes zero even a bit above exemption if rebate applies. Filing can still be needed.

Cup three is TDS already cut. Refund maybe coming. Filing is how refund comes. Skipping ITR because “tax is zero” is how refund sits in government pocket.

Sales boy had TDS of 4,200. He thought company already finished his tax life. Company finished withholding. Return is still his job.

If HR did not give Form 16 yet, slips still help. I wrote that wait here: Form 16 not given, can I still estimate tax.

Salary only people ask me every June. Do I pay advance tax. Often no if TDS is enough. Sometimes yes if other income sits on top. See Salary only, do I still pay advance tax.

I dont tell them “you are safe” from a voice note. I ask for slips, bank interest, and one AIS glance.

What I do the week I see I crossed the line

First I write a paper total. Salary from slips. Bonus. Interest AIS line. Any freelance if they did tuitions. Rent if they gave a room.

Then I see old vs new. I dont pick new because YouTube said new is always better. I type both in Old vs new regime estimate. If difference is 2,000 I still check portal later. Calculator and portal fight sometimes. I wrote that fight here: Why official tax and this calculator differ.

Then I check if ITR-1 even fits. ITR-1 is the simple form many salary people use. AIS with LTCG can kick you out. House sale can kick you out. I dont force ITR-1 because it loads faster on Jio.

If I am already after due date, I dont freeze. I file. Late fee is a line. Not filing is a longer line. Fee guess sits in ITR late fee estimator. Same sentence after the number. This is an estimate. Confirm on the official portal.

A tailor near Bapu Bazaar crossed exemption because of one gold sale story he thought was “family”. AIS did not think family. We sat two evenings. Filing still happened. Notice risk drops when you show the number yourself.

I tell them. Crossing exemption is not a crime. Hiding the crossing is how mail comes.

Filing is not the same as paying a fat tax

This is where shop owners panic. They hear “you crossed exemption” and they see 50,000 flying out. Not always.

Rebate years exist. Standard deduction sits on salary. Old regime has 80C type talk if they still use it. New regime has its own slab shape. I dont list every clause on a counter.

What I do is split the scare.

If tax is nil after rebate, you may still file. Especially if TDS wants refund. Especially if AIS already has your salary.

If tax is small, pay it. Dont wait for “next salary”. Next salary has rent.

If tax is big and you have no cash this week, still start the return draft. Payment and upload are cousins. They are not the same click.

I had a tuition teacher in Vaishali Nagar. She crossed exemption. Tax was not huge. She delayed because she felt poor. Late fee then sat on a small tax. Two pains. I showed her ITR filed late, late fee on 7 lakh even though she was below that. Pattern is the point. Delay has a price.

E-verify she also skipped. Upload is not finish. See E-verify pending.

Mistakes I hear on the phone every week

“My salary is 25,000 so I am below exemption.” Monthly is not yearly. Multiply. Add bonus. Add leave encashment if it came.

“I got cash gift from uncle so ignore it.” Some gifts are family. Some are not. I dont decide uncle on a blog. I say write it down and ask someone who can see full paper.

“AIS has extra interest so I will not file.” Wrong direction. Extra line you check. You dont hide. Bank first. See AIS shows extra interest.

“I will file when I buy a house next year.” Next year does not erase this year.

“CA said wait till December.” Some years last date is not December mood. I file when papers are ready. I dont wait for a rumour.

Regime switch without looking at HRA. People in rented rooms near Tonk Road sometimes need old regime more. Estimate tool is for that glance. Portal is final.

I also see people mix GST turnover with income tax exemption. GST registration line and income tax exemption line are not twins. Shop can have GSTIN and still have a small personal ITR. Different worlds.

What I keep ready so the line does not surprise me

I keep a September habit. Even if ITR due is later, I jot a running total after festival bonus talk. October bonus can push a person over the line. Festival bonus tax guess is here: Festival bonus in October.

Diary lines I want. PAN. Employer TAN if on slip. Bank interest certificate if bank sent. Rent receipts if old regime. LIC or PPF if they still claim.

Phone charged. One evening without shop rush. I dont do first ITR at 11 night when portal is heavy.

If they crossed exemption and they also have advance tax question, I send them to September cut talk: Advance tax 15 September. Salary TDS often covers it. Other income often does not.

I am not CBDT. PayByDate is a helper. Official incometax.gov.in wins. If exemption number changes in a budget night, I will still tell you to read the live slab, not my old sticker.

You crossed the line. File. Small tax or nil tax, still file. Then sleep.

This is an estimate. Confirm on the official portal.
